Langebaan is the ornithological capital of South Africa and has recorded the largest oyster shell deposits in the world. Founded in 1922, Langebaan was once used as a whaling station, but has since been transformed into undoubtedly the busiest holiday destination of the West Coast.
The white sanded beaches and the clear waters of the Langebaan Lagoon are two of the main attractions of the area. Formed by the rising and falling of sea levels during prehistoric times, Langebaan Lagoon is a purely salt water lagoon. Langebaan boasts almost year round sunshine and its safe waters and reliable winds make it a paradise for water sport enthusiasts – particularly kite surfers, boaters, wind surfers, kayakers, yachtsmen, water skiers, and fishermen.
The tidal mud flats of the Langebaan lagoon attract thousands of migratory birds every year and the prolific resident species include greater and lesser flamingos. Bird watchers flock to Langebaan to view over 300 species of birds found in the lagoon waters, which features the world’s largest breeding colony of black harriers. Langebaan is an internationally acclaimed Ramsar Site for its importance as a wetland.
Langebaan borders the scenic West Coast National Park; the only fossil park in South Africa. Although it may not have the Big Five, it does feature the Slow Five: tortoises, whales, sand sharks, porcupines, and dune moles. You may spot eland, wildebeest, hartebeest, bontebok, springbok, kudu, and mountain zebra. The Postberg section of the park is open to the public during August and September, to show off the multi-coloured carpets of spring flowers, often with wildlife grazing among them. The oldest known footprint of a modern human, known as Eve’s Footprint, was discovered in the park in 1995, dating back around 117 000 years. The remains of Africa’s only bear has also been discovered in Langebaan, along with the fossils of 200 other species. Visitors can enjoy an informative tour of a fossil dig, hunting for their own fossils, biking, hiking, and horse riding.
Langebaan hosts monthly craft markets and art exhibitions, community events such as the church bazaar, and the annual Langebaan Mussel Festival which takes place on the first weekend of October each year. Other activities to be enjoyed in Langebaan include golfing at the Langebaan Country Club, gambling at Club Mykonos casino, horse riding along the beach, and spa treatments.
