Description

LIONSROCK is a wonderful big cat sanctuary situated on a 1242 hectare game reserve, conveniently set just 3 hours drive from both Johannesburg and Bloemfontein, in the Free State. Set against a backdrop of majestic stone mountains, LIONSROCK offers visitors a chance to get up close and personal with a variety of big cats, plains game, and birds in their natural surroundings.

The farm was originally an asparagus and maize farm, and was transformed into a Game Farm in 1998. It was officially taken over at the end of 2006 and is now supported by FOUR PAWS, an internationally renowned animal welfare organisation.

The predator habitats on the farm feature 9 different predator species, including 79 lions in 25 prides, tiger, leopard, cheetah, caracal, wild dog, hyena, and serval. These animals have been rescued from bad conditions and as they were bred in captivity, they cannot be returned to the wild. These habitats have been created to look as much like their natural surroundings as possible, with large areas for family groups.

Safe from their natural enemies, a variety of other animals such as wildebeest, zebra, waterbuck, springbuck, impala, bat eared fox, blesbok, blue wildebeest, eland, hyrax, and red hartebeest can also be seen on the farm. A fascinating range of flora as well as numerous birds can be found in the park. Visitors can enjoy game drives in an open vehicle to enjoy the beautiful, scenic surrounds.
