With all the cosmopolitan razzle dazzle that the City of Gold has to offer, it can be tough choosing one restaurant over another. That’s why we’ve brought you 6 Johannesburg restaurants that serve as much entertainment as food.

Tanz Café has recently moved to a new venue in Fourways, so they are now even better equipped to host the best live entertainment in Johannesburg. It may look like a shebeen and feel like a shebeen, but you’ll be hard pressed to find any other signs of shanty life on Gleneagles Road, in the upmarket suburb of Greenside. This is exactly what makes Mammas Shebeen so appealing. The colourful restaurant and bar oozes African funkiness with township-inspired decor (all decor on display is available for purchase) that screams louder than the rhythmical tunes being pumped through the venue. Traditional South African foods vary from all-time favourites like pap and stew, to more daring dishes like mopane worms and chicken feet. Be warned: you cannot claim to have embraced the Shebeen experience if you haven’t tried one of these dishes!

The Chief’s Boma
The Chief’s Boma restaurant, situated next to a dam in the leafy gardens of the Indaba Hotel, offers an authentic pan-African dining experience that takes you from the southern tip of the African continent to the distant land of Morocco in one delicious meal. Enjoy sundowners on the deck overlooking the Boma dam or weave your way through the garden before sitting down to a traditional African buffet to the sounds of a live marimba band. When all is done, enjoy a glass of red wine or roast a marshmallow over the flaming Boma fire. Join them on Sundays for a full buffet African dinner experience for just R170 per couple.
