South Africa offers a diverse array of safari experiences where one can enjoy sighting the renowned Big Five: the leopard, rhino, elephant, buffalo, and lion. No matter how you choose to do it, by car, foot, or bike, you’re promised an experience you’re likely to remember for years to come! If you’re planning on going on safari, there are a few things you should know before you go:
No sighting guarantee
What you need to know, first of all, is that these wild animals are unpredictable. This means there is no way your guide can guarantee you’re definitely going to spot all or even some of the Big Five on your given day. However, the guides are trained to track the animals and they’ll do their utmost to ensure you have a worthwhile experience.
Be prepared
Pack your clothes according to the time of year you’re visiting and ensure you’ve done enough research. Kruger can get very cold in winter in the early morning and heat up later in the day, so be sure to dress in layers. Remember: binoculars, sturdy closed shoes, a sun hat, gloves, camera, and neutral coloured clothing – only bring the essentials! You’re going to be in the bush so your fancy clothes and high heels can stay safe at home. Check out our tips on what to pack for your safari.
Pick your time wisely
Winter (June to September) is the best time to go on safari as the trees and bushes are leafless, which helps to spot the animals easily. Limited food and water also means that the animals are in the open more as they hunt and drink at the waterhole. South Africa’s summer (December to February) sees the countryside at its most lush, but animals can be lost in dense shadows. Most common at this time are holiday makers from Europe, who come in herds for the hot temperatures.
Decide your transport method
Your method of transport (car or plane) largely depends on your time and budget. Flying can save you a lot of time while driving will give you a very rewarding experience as you get to enjoy the journey as much as the destination. There are plenty of other fantastic attractions to explore along the way.
Choose your park
South Africa has over 600 parks and reserves where you can enjoy a safari experience. You can find one offering any kind of experience you want, from guided safaris to self-guided tours. The parks cater for all budgets so you’ll definitely find one to suit your needs. For your first safari, we recommend Kruger National Park or Hluhluwe-iMfolozi.
Not all safaris are the same
Safari experiences will differ according to the reserve and establishment that offers it. Do a little research on what you’d like to experience, be it a game drive in an open top vehicle, a bush walk, a water-based cruise, or a bicycle safari, and plan your trip according to the place that offers it.
Go with a guide
We don’t recommend wandering aimlessly through the bush on your own. Having a guide means you’ll be protected from unexpected encounters with the animals as well as learn interesting information about the animals, their habits, and the environment as you go. They will also be able to track the animals to ensure you see as much as possible.
Don’t only go for the Big Five
South Africa’s reserves have a lot more to offer than simply the Big Five. Make a list of all of the animals you’d like to see, such as zebra, hippo, giraffe, and warthog, as well as the little known Small Five (Buffalo Weaver, Elephant Shrew, Leopard Tortoise, Ant Lion, Rhino Beetle) to ensure you enjoy the full package!
Enjoy the journey
Don’t get too caught up in spotting the main animals that you forget to enjoy the time along the way. Listen to the quiet, admire the beauty of the waterhole, keep an eye out for the birds flying overhead, or marvel at the splendour of the African sky.
You’ll remember it forever
Experiencing a true African safari is something that will stay with you forever. Spotting wildlife in their natural habitat is nothing short of awe-inspiring. No matter how hard one tries, you will never be able to justify it with words or pictures – you simply have to experience it for yourself.
