With rumbling tummies we searched through a sleepy Tulbagh for somewhere to have breakfast on Sunday morning. When one of our lovely bloggers recommended Things I Love, we headed over to it, to discover an eclectic and intriguing restaurant, deli, wine and gift shop.

The white washed iron wrought lattice, cosy seating, and assortment of small pot plants immediately brought to mind an unassuming French Provencal charm, and after some photographs of the exterior, we were drawn inside by the scent of freshly baked scones.

A warm smile and nod from the cashier on duty welcomed us in, and the delightful sight of a mishmash of curiosities greeted us. The shop’s neat shelving was piled high with everything from porcelain dolls, scarves, and clothing, to silver tea sets, hand-painted cushions, and a pin-up inspired hip flask and shot glass set available for purchase.

After placing our breakfast orders in a cosy side room with a fireplace, we returned to the gift shop and perused the shelves. Row after row of items beckoned us forward, from delicate hand-painted porcelain cups artfully arranged next to shelves of preserves, to the well-stocked deli selection that held water, fruit juices, yoghurts, and beers neatly stacked in rows. We were intrigued to say the least.

The wine selection available for purchase was viewable, but as it was Sunday, none of the items were on sale. However, we do suggest you stop in during the week, as they have a good range of locally produced wines, with names such as Saronsberg, Tulbagh Winery, and Lemberg.

Outside cafe at Things I Love. By Jono Gould

After the coffees arrived, our group slowly drifted back to our cosy table next to the fireplace. Some of our group talked about the cute outside café set up, and pointed out the local peacocks parading around the grassy areas, as we tucked into the piping hot breakfast and lunch arrays.

The meals were deliciously satisfying, and once our hunger was sated we headed back to Cape Town with decidedly heavy hearts.

Tulbagh truly is an eclectic gem that is well suited to travellers of all types, whether you’re a a family, couple, or a solo adventurer.
