District Six

Description

In 1966 District 6 was declared a white area and the coloured residents in the area were forcibly removed, District 6 was demolished and the 55,000 mostly-coloured residents were relocated 30 km away to the bleakness of Mitchell's Plain and the Cape Flats. Only religious buildings escaped the bull-dozers. The land has remained vacant, a reminder of Cape Towns violent history, but the District Six Beneficiary and Redevelopment Trust (funded by government and private donors) is ensuring that some 45,000 of the original inhabitants and their descendants have their land returned.
