Description

The group of residential neighbourhoods lying south of the city centre are collectively known as the Southern Suburbs of Cape Town. This collection of suburbs has a lot to offer the holiday maker where a variety of restaurants, markets, and attractions, meet beautiful views and top notch accommodation.

The Southern Suburbs stretch from Pinelands all the way to Lakeside and includes the popular suburbs of Rondebosch, Newlands, Claremont, Wynberg, Bergvliet, Constantia, and Tokai.

Newlands is one of the wettest, and therefore greenest, suburbs in Cape Town - said to have its own micro-climate due to its position on the eastern slopes of the Table Mountain. Newlands is home to Sahara Park Cricket Stadium, Newlands Rugby Stadium, Rhodes Memorial and Restaurant, and the beautiful Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens which offers an aerial walkway, a plethora of beautifully landscaped gardens, a delightful tea room, outdoor movie screenings, and summer sunset concerts. There are plenty of hiking trails to be enjoyed in Newlands.

Bishopscourt and Constantia are some of Cape Town’s most exclusive suburbs, characterised by wide tree-lined streets and large houses. The Constantia Wine Route is a popular attraction in the Southern Suburbs, where Capetonians can enjoy a bit of sunshine and wine without having to traipse to Stellenbosch or Franschhoek. Popular Constantia wineries include Constantia Glen, Constantia Uitsig, Buitenverwachting, Steenberg Wine Estate, Klein Constantia, and Groot Constantia.

The bohemian suburb of Observatory is famed for its eclectic shops, restaurants, pubs, and markets. The South African Astronomical Observatory was founded here in 1972 and is open to the public two nights a month. Famous attractions in the Southern Suburbs include the University of Cape Town in Rondebosch, Baxter Theatre in Rosebank, and Kenilworth Racecourse. Golfers will enjoy playing a round at Steenberg Golf Club, Rondebosch Golf Course, and Westlake Golf Course.

Shopping enthusiasts will enjoy a touch of retail therapy at Cavendish Square in Claremont, Blue Route Mall in Tokai, Howard Centre in Pinelands, Kenilworth Centre in Kenilworth, Constantia Village, and China Town in Ottery.

There are plenty of markets worth exploring. Take a trip to the Friday night market or Porter Estate Produce Market in Tokai on Saturday mornings, the Oval Market in Newlands on Wednesday evenings, or the Neighbourgoods Market at the Old Biscuit Mill in Woodstock on Saturdays.

The Southern Suburbs is a great base for an exciting holiday with cosy and comfortable accommodation to suit all needs and budgets.
