Description

Tsitsikamma, meaning “place of abundant water” is a beautiful region nestled between the Tsitsikamma Mountains and the turquoise Indian Ocean in the Eastern Cape. The area is riddled with magnificent forests, rivers, and waterfalls where activities like bungee jumping, canopy tours, and nature hikes can be enjoyed. Browse our extensive list of Tsitsikamma accommodation.

Aptly described as the “garden of the Garden Route”, the Tsitsikamma region is absolutely breath-taking in its natural beauty, with meandering streams and rivers, gushing waterfalls, and crystal clear pools that give the region its name. The Tsitsikamma National Park is a protected conservation area that forms part of the Garden Route National Park. It boasts an 80km stretch of coastline and the Tsitsikamma forest, an ancient indigenous forest that supports an intricate ecosystem home to the elusive Knysna Loerie.

Nature lovers will enjoy ambling through the spectacular Keurbooms River Nature Reserve that stretches over 2500 hectares as well as visiting the Birds of Eden Bird Sanctuary (the world’s largest single span aviary). Strolling along the suspension bridge at the Storms River mouth, with incredible views across Tsitsikamma and the surrounds, is a must.

Adrenaline junkies will enjoy bungee jumping from the Bloukrans River Bridge; the highest commercial bungee jump in the world at 216m. Another exhilarating activity visitors can enjoy in Tsitsikamma is a canopy tour through the Tsitsikamma indigenous rainforest, where you slide through the treetops from one platform to another along a series of steel cables. Alternatively, visit the Tsitsikamma Falls Adventure Park, where exciting activities such as waterfall zip line tours, gravity zone abseiling, and quad biking tours can be enjoyed.

Those who wish to explore the Tsitsikamma area in a more leisurely way can do the Woodcutter’s Journey; a guided3-hour tour through the forest and along the Elephant Trail, with refreshments and meals served alongside the Storms River. Other ways to explore Tsitsikamma include Segway tours, Blackwater tubing, and kayak and lilo trips. Tsitsikamma is also home to some spectacular hiking trails such as the Otter Trail, Suspension Bridge and Lookout Trail, Waterfall Trail, Loerie Trail, and Blue Duiker Trail.
