Description

Uvongo is a laidback seaside resort town on KwaZulu-Natal’s Hibiscus Coast. The friendly town has a relaxed holiday atmosphere with unspoilt beaches and lush subtropical vegetation adding to the immense natural beauty. Spend lazy days on the beach or set out to explore the animal sanctuaries, restaurants, shops, nature reserves, golf courses, and more.

Uvongo lies at the mouth of the Vungu River, which has a beautiful 23m waterfall that plummets into a small gorge in the lagoon. The name derives from the Zulu word that describes the sound of the waterfall. The natural process of the waterfall has caused the lagoon to be very deep and holidaymakers are often seen exploring the river mouth by pedal boat.

Despite losing Blue Flag status when it was damaged by heavy storms in 2007, Uvongo beach remains an ideal spot to enjoy the warm Indian Ocean waters. The popular beach is very safe and appeals to families with small children as the waves are quite gentle. The ocean temperatures average a pleasant 21°C throughout the year, making it a playground for water sport enthusiasts. Beach bodies can enjoy everything from surfing and fishing, to snorkelling and dolphin and whale watching.

There’s also plenty to do off the beach. The Uvongo Bird Park has walk-through aviaries for an up-close, educational nature experience. Kids will love the tractor rides, pony rides, and feeding the farm animals and birds at Old Macdonlad’s Family Farm, as well as trip to the Pure Venom Reptile Park in Shelly Beach. Connected to the river by easy terrain footpaths, the Uvongo River Nature Reserve is a much-loved picnic spot with its shaded grassy river banks and kiddie’s paddling pool. The Oribi Gorge Nature Reserve and Umtamvuna Nature Reserve can also be found along the South Coast.

Uvongo is the largest residential area on the lower KZN South Coast and a mecca of multimillion Rand properties, yet it maintains a small village charm thanks to building restrictions. The town offers several restaurants, shops, and pubs, and is a popular area for golfing. Avid golfers can enjoy playing at Uvongo Golf Course as well as the nearby Southbroom Golf Course, Margate Country Club, and San Lameer Country Club.

For an idyllic seaside getaway with an abundance of natural beauty, book your stay at Uvongo.
