Description

Witsand is a quaint village situated at the mouth of the Breede River, in the Western Cape. It is known for having the highest concentration of Southern Right Whales on the South African coast, and offers 4km of white sandy beaches, magnificent Cape fynbos, and a myriad of water sports. Browse our list of excellent Witsand accommodation below.

Witsand is known as the “whale nursery of South Africa” due to the record number of Southern Right Whales that migrate to St Sebastien Bay annually between June and November. Witsand offers the best land-based vantage point to view these 58 ton gentle giants of the ocean. Those lucky enough may even spot the birth of a baby whale, which is then thrown into the air by the “midwife” to catch its first breath of air. Visitors are drawn from far and wide to experience Witsand's whale watching opportunities and as a result, an abundance of excellent accommodation, from B&Bs to lodges, are available in Witsand.

The town of Witsand is situated along the renowned Breede River, one of the largest and most navigable rivers in South Africa. Both the river and the area are superb for boating and water sports. Activities include kite surfing, water skiing, surfing, wind surfing, canoeing, sailing, spear fishing, and snorkelling. Nature lovers will be in their element with Witsand’s wonderful nature trails. Be sure to do the 4km beach hike to Moodies Well and stroll the beaches to explore rock pools filled with octopus, star fish, sea urchins, and crabs. View the beauty of Witsand on a 4x4, bike, or by foot to experience the diversity of fynbos and over 294 species of birds.

Alongside Witsand, De Mond Nature Reserve, lying at the mouth of the Heuningnes River, is a 954 hectare reserve featuring species of small animals and diverse birdlife. The reserve is particularly important for protecting the breeding colonies of the Damara and Caspian terns (South Africa's most endangered coastal bird) and the African black oystercatcher (South Africa's second most threatened coastal bird). De Hoop Nature and Marine Reserve is also a popular destination near Witsand. This 3000 hectare reserve boasts unspoilt fynbos and a protected area with a variety of marine organisms; home to the Cape mountain zebras, Cape vultures, the bontebok, and the De Hoop vlei.

Other activities in Witsand include taking a trip across the Breede River on one of the only hand-operated ferries in the world or cruising up to the famous Bush Pub. Witsand is also popular for golfing, horse riding, fishing in the Breede River for 50kg cob, paragliding, tractor trails, ostrich trails, and dining at the Anchorage Beach Restaurant.

Visit the Barry Memorial Church, built in 1859, a national monument still used for church services and weddings. Alternatively, do heritage tours of Witsand or visit the Kraaltjie harbour built in the 1890s.
