Cape Town International Kite Festival
Description
Watch amazing professional kiting displays – including giant inflatables, stunt kites and kite fighting in the main arena. Bring your own kite, buy one at the festival – or join in one of our kite-making workshops. Or just come along to see amazing kite creations from around the world. Plus competitions, kite-making workshops, stalls and lots to eat and drink. Africa's biggest kite festival is proudly hosted by Cape Mental Health. All profits go towards helping Cape Mental Health provide vital services to adults and children in resource-poor communities.
Festival Activities
The annual Kite Festival – now in its 24th year – is held in Muizenberg and offers a range of fantastic family fun activities in aid of a very good cause. Please note that kite flying is weather dependent – listen to the announcements made over the public address system.
Colouring-in competition
Free entry to children aged between 2 to 6 years old, if they bring along a special Cape Town International Kite Festival colouring-in picture available for download on the website.
Kite-making workshops
There will be FREE kite-making workshops for both children and adults on both days of the Festival. Come and decorate a simple diamond kite, learn how to make a traditional bamboo and paper Cape Swaeltjie (Swallow) kite or join one of the workshops with our international kiters. You'll find the workshops in the two Workshop Tents. Register when you arrive at the Festival to secure your place. Or check out the website for step-by-step instructions to make your own kite at home from an old newspaper.
Edukite Competition
Primary schools and schools for learners with special educational needs will be showing off their kite creations and hoping to win cash prizes for their school in the annual EduKite Competition.
Heritage (Swaeltjie) Kite Competition
Local kite-makers are invited to enter the Heritage Kite Competition. Judges will be looking for the best 'Swaeltjie', a traditional, hand-made swallow shape kite, made with bamboo, paper or material. There is also an Open category for hand-crafted kites of any shape. There are cash prizes to be won. Download the entry form from the website.
Food and craft stalls
Enjoy yummy food, relax in the cosy tea garden or shop for a kite or craft items at the many stalls.
