Description

The Tourist Junction is located on the second floor of a 19th century red bricked building in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal. Formerly a railway station, it stocks an array of brochures about tourist activities and tours you can do in the area. The staff are friendly and well informed, and tourists can book bus tours from the office.

This 19th century red-brick building used to be a railway station. In the entrance hall there is a statue of Mahatma Ghandi, who bought a train ticket from this spot in 1893. An architectural firm in London designed this building as well as one for Toronto at the same time. During the build the plans got mixed up, and the roof here is now able to support up to 5m of snow – not a particularly useful feature in Durban! The roof of the building in Toronto caved in during the first extreme winter.
