Eseltjiesrus Donkey Sanctuary

The Eseltjiesrus Donkey Sanctuary situated just 2km outside of McGregor is a wonderful family friendly attraction in the Western Cape. The mission of Eseltjiesrus is to provide a sanctuary and home for abused, neglected, and elderly donkeys, in a place where they can live out the rest of their days in a restful and safe environment.

Over the last few years, the donkey sanctuary has provided a permanent home to over 25 donkeys, as well as fostered homes to a further 10 donkeys in the Western Cape. Each donkey at the sanctuary is cared for and checked at least twice a day; their eyes and hooves are cleaned, fly repellent is applied, and any wounds or infections are treated. The donkeys are fed twice a day with different types of hay, while the elderly and thin donkeys get soft food in separate enclosures.

Visitors are encouraged to visit the sanctuary to interact with the donkeys and learn about them. Other ways visitors can help is by donating or virtually adopting one of the donkeys. Don’t forget to be here to watch the feedings at 16h00 daily.
