Goukou Tidal River
Description
The Goukou River is an estuarine river that divides Stilbaai into east and west, in the Western Cape. The river is now also part of a marine reserve, but fishing and collecting bait in specific areas are still allowed.
The river teems with fish, such as spotted grunter, steenbras, cob, white stump nose, garick, etc. Numerous estuarine organisms are found here, such as mud prawns, small crabs, blood worms, pencil bait, brine shrimps, pipe fishes, eel grass, puffer fish, millions of baby mullets, and much more. Bird life includes egrets, hadidas, cranes, terns, sand pipers, seagulls, king fishers, and other sea birds.
