Liliesleaf Farm
Description
Liliesleaf Farm in Rivonia, Johannesburg, was once the headquarters of the ANC and Congress Aliance's military wing, known as “Umkhonto we Sizweâ€. Today, Liliesleaf is preserved as a museum after South Africa's former President, Thabo Mbeki, established the Liliesleaf Trust in 2001.
The museum offers an insightful look into South Africa's history and socio-political past - this is a must see for anybody interested in the history of apartheid or slavery. The museum tracks the story of the farm itself right until it was raided, as well as the stories of many struggle heroes who provided this country with the bright future that it has today.
Since the museum was opened in 2008 it has received much acclaim, not only as a significant historical monument, but also for the unorthodox interactive style of some of the exhibits. The award winning exhibits are set across 3 acres, and you should allow a minimum of 2 – 3 hours to fully explore.
Cedric’s Café serves light meals and refreshments. Self-guided and educational tours are available.
