Description

Mpofu Nature Reserve is a malaria-free reserve situated approximately 25km northwest of Fort Beaufort and 20km west of Balfour, Eastern Cape. Established in 1985, the reserve lies on the escarpment and lower valleys of the Katberg Mountains and covers 7500 hectares of steep and varied terrain.

The reserve is run by Eastern Cape Parks and set to conserve and protect the diversity of habitats and fauna present. It is close to the site of Chief Maqoma's Kraal, the exact location being a closely guarded secret. The legendary Blinkwater Monster is also reputed to visit the reserve regularly.

The reserve is home to wildlife such as Burchell’s zebra, eland, white rhino, giraffe, Cape buffalo, and bushbuck. The mountains and valleys offer plenty of hiking trails with magnificent views. Educational tours and guided game drives are recommended. There are also 4x4 trails and self-guided game drives available.
