Muir College

Description

Muir College is a public school for boys in Uitenhage, Eastern Cape. Muir College is one of the oldest English-speaking high schools in South Africa. It teaches Grades 4 to 12 and currently has 670 students. Muir College’s sister school is Riebeek College.

HERITAGE

Muir College was founded in 1822 by James Rose-Innes when he established Uitenhage’s first free government school with 60 students. In 1865, a fee-paying school known as the Proprietary School was opened. In 1873 these two schools merged and moved to Park Avenue in 1875.

During 1892 the school’s name changed to Muir Academy after Sir Thomas Muir, the new Secretary General of Education. In 1904 a new school building opened on Park Avenue and the name changed to Muir High School. The senior and primary schools merged in 1994 and occupy the Vanes Estate site. The school motto is Nec Pluribus Impar, which means "Second to None"

The Matric pass rate was 92% in 2014.

Muir College is best known for rugby, cricket, and choir. The most important sports grounds are called the Ellis Rugby Field and Skillicorn Sports Complex.
