Nylsvley Conservancy
Description
The 4000 hectare Nylsvley Conservancy is an internationally renowned RAMSAR site, and forms part of South Africa’s largest flood plain near the town of Naboomspruit, Limpopo. The conservancy provides a home for over 72 mammal species, including a breeding herd of the rare Roan antelope.
In years of lots of rain, there has been known to be as many as 80,000 migratory water birds on the floodplains, where as many as 420 species have been recorded. Of this, 365 species were identified on the reserve itself. The reserve also provides a sanctuary to 37 birds on the Red Data list. There are 5 bird hides in the reserve for avid twitchers.
In addition to the birds, the reserve is also home to over 600 plant species. There are dirt roads for game viewing, walking, hiking, and mountain biking. There are also campsites and picnic facilities. An old farmhouse is used for research purposes and a lecture hall is ideal for conferences.
