The Port of Richards Bay is South Africa’s most northern and eastern port, situated in KwaZulu-Natal. Richards Bay is one of the country’s largest harbours and boasts the largest coal export facility in the world.

This deep sea water port consists of a dry bulk terminal, a multi-purpose terminal, and the privately operated coal terminal. There are also private woodchip export terminals and a bulk liquid terminal. Port of Richards Bay exports over 30 commodities, including woodchips, magnetite, aluminium, and steel to the UK, USA, India, Middle East, Far East, and Pacific Rim. It imports 15 commodities like sulphur, coking coal, and alumina from Australia, Canada, and various West African countries.

Port of Richards Bay is one of the best bulk ports in the world, handling more than 80 million tonnes a year making up 60% of South Africa’s seaborne cargo. It has specialised cargo handling facilities, efficient ship turnaround, and deep water infrastructure. It is serviced by a railway line that connects Gauteng and Mpumalanga to handle the majority of coal exports, as well as railway and road systems to Durban, Mozambique, and Swaziland.
