HERITAGE
In 1893, a group of people led by Rev BP Marchand decided that a girls’ school was needed in the suburb of Rondebosch. The school opened with 76 pupils, including 7 boarders and 11 boys - despite attempts to channel the boys to the nearby Rondebosch Boys’ High School.
Rustenburg High School for Girls was founded in 1894 in the historic Rustenburg House, dating back to the early years of the Dutch settlement in the Cape. In 1932, the high school moved to its new building on Erinvale Estate and Charlie’s Hope. Charlie’s Hope was demolished in 1976 and rebuilt closer to the school. Rustenburg House was declared a national monument in 1941 and still houses the Junior School.
