Spion Kop
Description
Spion Kop, also known as The Acre of Massacre, is a battle site where the bloodiest battle in The Anglo-Boer War (1899-1902) took place on 24 January 1900.
The site is located on top of a hill which is a very visible beacon, and is the highest point on the Tugela Ridge. The Tugela Ridge is a broken ridge of mountains, bordering the Tugela river on the Northern side. It also forms the Northern ridge of a huge basin stretching from the Maluti mountains to the N3 motorway at Colenso and Estcourt. The Western border of this basin is formed by the Northern and Central Drakensberg mountains.
