The Joburg Theatre Complex
Description
The iconic Joburg Theatre Complex, previously known as the Johannesburg Civic Theatre, is a world class entertainment centre, consisting of the Mandela Theatre, Fringe Theatre, People's Theatre, and Space.com. The largest of these theatres is The Nelson Mandela Theatre, which regularly sees over 75% of audience capacity and is open a minimum of 50 weeks every year. Audiences can enjoy breakfasts, lunches, or pre-show dinners at STAGES, the theatre restaurant.
Initially built by the council in 1962, the theatre was given a major facelift in the late 1980s, turning it into one of the most technically proficient theatres in the southern hemisphere. The Youth Development Department at Joburg Theatre is mandated with the development of young artists and audiences. It hopes to instil the spirit of entrepreneurship in community theatre through workshops, thereby opening up career paths in South African theatre through business in theatre.
