Description

The Market Theatre is a lovely theatre complex situated in Johannesburg, Gauteng, that has evolved over 3 decades to offer a platform for theatre, music, dance, and performing arts. Founded in 1976 by Mannie Manim and the late Barney Simon, the complex is internationally renowned as South Africa’s “Theatre of the Struggle”.

The Market Theatre is made up of 3 phenomenal theatres, namely the Barney Simon Theatre, Laager Theatre, and the Main Theatre. Armed with the belief that culture really can change society, the theatre gave a voice to the voiceless during the apartheid regime. The dream was realised in 1995 when the theatre received the American Jujamcyn Award, a prize that honours a theatre organization that has made an outstanding contribution to the development of creative talent. It’s 21 international and over 300 South African theatre awards gives testimony to the bravery and quality of its work over the years.
