The Playhouse Company
Description
The Playhouse Company is a wonderful entertainment and theatre complex in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal. The current theatre front incorporates and preserves two of the city’s most famous landmarks, namely Prince’s Theatre (1926) and the Tudor-styled Playhouse (1935).
In the early 1980s, these two famous entertainment venues were renovated into a state of the art multi-venue theatre complex, which was officially opened in the mid-1980s as The Natal Playhouse, later to be known as The Playhouse.
As a cultural institution, The Playhouse Company receives public funding from the government and is mandated to produce an unbiased programme of live theatre productions in the fields of music, drama, and dance. They also aim to represent the diverse cultural groups in KwaZulu-Natal, both in terms of audiences and artists. In addition, the company runs an educational development programme in the performing arts for growing youth audiences.
