Uitkyk Wine Estate
Description
Uitkyk (Lookout) is a lovely wine estate situated in the foothills of the Simonsberg Mountain in Stellenbosch, named after the views of the Cape Peninsula, False Bay, and Table Mountain. Founded for cattle grazing in 1712, the wine estate only started producing wine in 1929 and later, brandy. Today, the estate boasts a beautiful Georgian manor house, expansive lawns for picnics, horses and cows, a wine tasting centre, and a kiddies’ jungle gym.
The neo-classical manor house, completed in 1788, is one of only three 18th century double story, flat roofed Georgian style houses left in South Africa. Murals were discovered in the hallway under 15 layers of paint and a 3 year project completed in 1998 uncovered them for all to see.
There expansive lawns are fantastic in summer, especially for enjoying picnics, a game of boules, or even croquet. Picnic blankets and tables are provided. Picnics include artisan breads, cheeses, patés, olives, charcuterie, smoked salmon, fruit, chocolate brownies, and your choice of Flat Roof Manor wines. Picnics to be booked 24 hours in advance. The Dreamweavers jungle gym will keep kids entertained for hours.
