Vaal Racecourse
Description
Vaal Racecourse is a horse racing track situated in Viljoensdrif in the Free State province of South Africa. The course has both a sand and turf track. The racecourse is controlled by Phumelela Gaming and Leisure Limited, who are responsible for racing in the Free State, Northern Cape, Eastern Cape, and Gauteng.
Horse racing is a hugely popular sport in South Africa, with regular racing taking place around the country. The sport in South Africa enjoys a long and rich history that can be traced back to 1797, with the first recorded race club meeting taking place in 1802.
Vaal Sand Track: • 2 800 m oval • Races up to 1 000 m straight course • Beyond 1 000 m clockwise round the turn with a 1 000 m run-in. • High-number draws are favoured in 1 000 m races, but draw is of limited significance over all other distances.
Vaal Turf Track: • 3 000 m oval. • Races up to 1 600 m straight course • Beyond 1 600 m clockwise round the turn with a 1 000 m run-in. • Has the longest circumference, run-in and straight in SA. • Low-number draws slightly favoured in 1 800 m races, but draw generally of little significance over all other distances.
