Weenen Game Reserve, also known as Weenen Biosphere, offers wild and undulating African savannah, thornveld valleys, spectacular river gorges and distant mountain peaks form the backdrop of this 6,500 hectare area. The Bushmans River flowing through a deep-cut gorge, rich valley bushveld vegetation and the diversity of flora and fauna established Weenen Game Reserve as KwaZulu-Natal’s favourite Midlands wildlife destination. It forms part of the Thukela Biosphere Reserve, along with the Tugela, Bushamns, Bloukrans River valleys.

What's in a Name

The name Weenen comes from the Africans phrase: to weep, and was named thus due to the defeats that the Voortrekkers suffered at the hands of the Zulus at Bloukrans and Moordspruit.

Game Viewing and Bird Watching

An excellent road network and guided and self guided trails allow visitors to view a variety of wildlife species including white rhino, giraffe, zebra, kudu, ostrich, common reedbuck, grey duiker, bushbuck, steenbuck and mountain reedbuck. Over 250 bird species have also been recorded.

Facilities

Guest facilities include a game-viewing hide near one of the waterholes, a vulture feeding site and three picnic sites with barbecue facilities.

Weenen’s campsite boasts twelve shady campsites, which accommodate tents and caravans. Each campsite features barbecue facilities with firewood and charcoal for sale.
