On those lazy Sunday mornings you just don’t feel like cooking, why not hit the road and find a cosy café or restaurant where you can be served in style, in Cape Town’s Southern Suburbs?
- Cocoa WahWah
Where: 18 Main Road, Rondebosch
Open on Sundays: 08:00 – 22:00
The flagship of the Cocoa franchise in Cape Town, Cocoa WhaWha is a hub of friendliness and bustling service, and their bakery produces divine scones, cakes, brownies, and other fabulous desserts. If you do stop in and are looking for something to warm you up, I recommend their Aztec Hot Chocolate that has a sprinkling of Cayenne Pepper, along with a few other secret ingredients!
- Cattle Baron:
Where: Shop 1, Old Constantia Village, Constantia
Open on Sundays: 10:00 – 12:30 (breakfast) 12:30 – late (lunch and supper)
Set within the Old Constantia Village, in Shop 1a, no other restaurant in the area can compete with their mouth-watering Sunday mini-breakfast buffet! This Sunday Buffet has a good mix of options, with everything from grilled tomatoes and potato rostis, to sautéed mushrooms, steak strips, and scrambled eggs. The buffet is reasonably priced and the classy setting makes it an ideal place for a special occasion. If that doesn’t tickle your fancy, page through their extensive menu, which also has a decent vegetarian selection, as well as several seafood options. Book a table by phoning: 021-794-4930.
- Bongos
Where: 28 Pluto Road, Plumstead
Open on Sundays: 12:00 – 23:00
This little Southern Suburbs gem is quite small (38 seats in total), but along with that it provides a rustic setting and homey feel. In fact, the warm family-friendly atmosphere is apparent as soon as you set foot inside. They serve fantastic roasts on Sundays, and for the amount of food you get, it is very well priced. Book a table by phoning: 021-761-0782.
- A Taste on Main
Where: Lakeside Shopping Centre, Lakeside
Open on Sundays: 08:00 – 20:00
This family-run restaurant is a favourite of mine, and the friendly owners are a treat to deal with. They offer very well-priced breakfasts, have only indoor seating, and the menu has a good variety of cuisines. If you’re leaning more towards the lunches, then their seafood selection, steaks, gatsbys, wraps, toasties, or salads will be right up your alley. Book a table by phoning: 021-788-5021.
- Franieba’s Restaurant
Where: Red Herring Trading Post, Noordhoek
Open on Sundays: 09:00 – 17:00
The combined dream of two lovely ladies, Francis Phalane and Monieba Moses, (you can read their story on the interior board), has come to life in the form of this quaint restaurant. Their outdoor section is gorgeous, with white-washed stone tables and benches set below towering trees, though there is also a small indoor section. The hearty foods have a good mixture of cultures, from traditional English breakfasts, to Cape Malay curries at lunch. You won’t walk away feeling disappointed. Please note that if they’re busy, service can be a tad slow, but the staff are always friendly and happy to assist with whatever you may require. Book a table by calling: 021-789-0122.
