While there are plenty of lists that explicitly state what to bring along for a South African safari or hike, there’s little to no advice given to those who are travelling around South African cities in summer. So keep these 7 items in mind when you head out the front door to spend a day with friends.

1. Sunscreen

Sunscreen or sunblock should be on every traveller and local’s daily list, as the South African sun is deceptively intense, and even a short 20 minute stroll can you have you slightly pink and rosy cheeked from the sun’s rays. Picking a sunblock with an SPF of 25+ is advisable, especially if you’re heading to the beach, be it for surfing, sunning, or shark cage diving. It’s also advisable to cover up and layer on sunscreen when spending the day outdoors on one of the double decker City Sightseeing Buses.

2. Hand Sanitizer

With many areas affected by water shortages, the best back-up hygiene option is a small tub or tube of hand sanitizer. Most hand sanitizers are alcohol based, but there are also plenty of options out there with less harmful chemicals.

3. Hats

Along with sunscreen, wearing a hat is advisable. Your head, though presumably covered with hair, can still be sunburnt, and you can potentially end up with sunstroke!

4. A Warm Top or Cardigan

Though summer days are usually hot, chilly breezes and cooler evenings dictate a need to keep a warm top or cardigan close at hand. If you don’t happen to have one packed, most shops will stock a variety of styles and colours throughout the summer season.

5. Lip balm

A staple in every woman’s handbag should be lip balm, and preferably one with an SPF protection factor, because believe it or not, your lips can burn too! A pretty lipstick is also advisable when you’re planning sundowners or clubbing.

6. Sunglasses

As you know, a pair of complementary sunglasses can add plenty of oomph to an outfit, but don’t view sunglasses as just a fashion statement. With plenty of glare given off by buildings, cars, and the beach, coupled with the potential of sun damage, investing in a pair or two of UV protection sunglasses is advisable. You should also be aware that the sunglasses sold on the side of the road are very pretty replicas of mainstream brands, but in no way offer the same protective options of sunglasses bought in a reputable store.

7. Insect Repellent

Though I wish the flies would fly on by, they don’t, and can become a bother in busy areas especially if food is being served. At night, most restaurants light citronella candles to keep bugs at bay, but do your part by spraying on an insect repellent, to ensure they stay well away from you. If you’re heading to tropical areas, or are planning to hike, please ensure you use insect repellent to prevent any potential tick, flea, or mosquito bites.
