The Tsitsikamma region, known as the place of abundant waters, is set along the captivating Garden Route in the Western and Eastern Cape provinces. Here the mountains stretch to the heavens, the gorges run deep with rough river waters leading into the indigo ocean, the sands are bleached white, and the forests and fynbos creep along every surface. These natural talents collide with a mild climate to offer one of the most exciting adventure destinations along the Garden Route. Here are some exciting adventures in Tsitsikamma:
Explore the Forest on the Woodcutter’s Journey
If you feel safer travelling along the forest floor, the Woodcutter’s Journey may be more your thing. The tractor ride explores Tsitsikamma Forest National Park and meanders through hardwood, yellowwood, and stinkwood trees, mountain streams, and century old forest ferns. With a fully qualified naturalist to point out the wonders of the forest, you’ll get to feel the Bushmen’s Bedding, the soft growth of the helichrysum with its eucalyptus-like smell that insects despise. A fresh waft of the leaves is believed to relieve asthma, high blood pressure, and stress. The 3-hour woodcutter’s Journey costs R250 per person for a lunch trip and R200 for morning or afternoon tea trips. A minimum of 4 passengers are required. Call +27 (0)42 281 1836.
Dare the Bloukrans Bungee
Bloukrans Bridge is one of the most famous adventure sites in South Africa. Dare to attempt the highest commercial bungee jump in the world and live to tell the tale. Hurtle down 216 startling metres towards the river below before being sprung back up in a heart-stopping swing. If you can’t face the jump, you can do a bridge walk to experience the height, and enjoy the views of the Bloukrans River as it flows into the sea. Call +27 (0)42 281 1458.
Tackle the Tsitsikamma Canopy tour
Explore the indigenous forests from above on a treetop canopy tour. Many of the platforms are built 30m above the ground floor, around giant Outeniqua Yellowwood trees that are up to 700 years old! The scenery and birdlife is spectacular and professional guides ensure your safety at all times, while keeping you informed of the fascinating forest ecology. Keep an eye out for the elusive Knysna Loerie or Narina Trogon! The canopy tour costs R495 (including concession, permit fees, and light refreshments). Call +27 (0)42 281 1836.
Hike the Striptease River Trail
The Striptease River Trail begins from Tsitsikamma Lodge and runs deep through the heart of the ancient forest; forming one of the Garden Route’s best kept secrets. As its name implies, it is often done without much clothing, but how you choose to do the hike is your choice. The trail is completely hidden in the trees and you are assured of privacy as, when you book at the lodge, it is reserved exclusively for you. Start off fully clothed and shed off some items as you dip into the 11 pools along the 5km trail, with names like Bikini Pool, Topless Pool, and Bottomless Pool. The trail takes around 4 hours to complete and is completely free for guests staying at the lodge. Call +27 (0)42 280 3802.
Storms River Tubing
Race down the Storms River on a tube and battle the rapids that threaten to throw you off course (and off your raft)! The experience includes a safety and river briefing, guides, equipment, permits, a scenic forest drive, snacks and refreshments, and lunch on return. Storms River Tubing lasts around 4 hours and will set you back R550 per person. Call +27 (0) 42 281 1842. Book online.
