We ladies at the office are spending way too much time on sites like Pinterest looking for great Christmas ideas. But we’re getting away with it, because instead of keeping all these inspiring ideas to ourselves, we’re sharing them with you. Just think of it as our little Christmas gift to you! I’ve been scrolling through pages and pages of beautiful décor designs, and here are some of the trends that I’ve discovered to create the perfect table setting for your Christmas feast.
- New Colours
One of the biggest trends taking over Christmas décor is the move away from the traditional colours of red, green, white, and gold. The shops are currently filled with trinkets in pinks, blues, and purples that complement some of the traditional colours. Try combinations like green and pink, gold and blue, or red and purple. Your options are endless so enjoy the new freedom of decorating!
- Festive Flowers
A beautiful flower arrangement is always a winning centrepiece for a dinner table. And in South Africa we are fortunate to have a load of summer blooms to choose from. While poinsettias and holly are traditional Christmas flowers, you can use anything and everything, including roses, daisies, white hydrangeas, proteas, tulips, amaryllis, hypericum berries, reindeer moss, ferns, pine branches, and more.
- Fruit
If you lack a green thumb and fear killing off your flowers before your guests even arrive, you can simply grab a pretty bowl and a bag of apples. Shine the apples, lob them into the bowl, add a few pine fronds or even dry twigs from your garden and you’re good to go. Try to avoid starting a food fight though, because apples are pretty mean ammunition!
- Baubels
In your last minute trip to the shops you forgot to buy the apples (read our article Tips to Brave festive Season Shopping). Don’t stress. All you have to do is borrow a few baubles and ornaments from your Christmas tree, place them in a pretty bowl, and voila…table décor in under 5 minutes!
- Favours
Make your guests feel extra special this Christmas by placing a little favour at their setting for them to take home. I love this idea of a mini stocking for the cutlery! Christmas tree ornaments, name tags, and Christmas crackers also work really well.
- Candles
Although candles don’t really work with traditional Christmas lunches, many families will be enjoying Christmas dinners together. Candles are the perfect way to create that special mood of peace and harmony…and with a few carols playing in the background, everyone will soon be having themselves a merry little Christmas.
- Chairs
While the main focus may be on the table setting, you don’t want it to be too cluttered – especially when the food arrives! Consider taking some of the focus off the table by adding some décor to your chairs. These angel wings are gorgeous, but another idea is to tie some pretty fabric around the chair and adorn with a bauble or flower.
