It’s almost school holidays! This is great for kids, but I know a lot of moms (myself included) who are already counting down the days until their kids are back at school. It’s not because we don’t love spending time with our kids (we really do!), it’s just that we also want a break…and being a human jungle gym to a horde of energizer bunny clones doesn’t do the trick. I’m always on the hunt for things to do with my kids (more specifically, things for them to do while I do nothing) so I’ve compiled a list of holiday theatre productions that your kids – and you – will love!

Jack and the Beanstalk
Where: The Nelson Mandela Theatre at the Joburg Theatre Complex, Johannesburg
When: 31 October – 30 December 2012
Tickets: R190 – R290 though the Joburg Theatre or on 0861 670 670.

Theatregoers have been raving about this much-anticipated, family-friendly pantomime. As usual, Janice Honeyman has brought tons of festive FEE-FI-FO-FUN! This version of the classic story is one of the craziest and most original ever. The star-studded cast boasts some of South Africa’s best creative talents, including Tobie Cronjé and award-winning actor and comedian, Desmond Dube, who will be donning the usual over-the-top frocks as Dame Dora Dimpledumpling. It’s the ultimate Christmas treat, with plenty of surprises to keep both kids and parents amused. Cheer on the hero, and boo the villain while you marvel at the extravagant costumes and magical scenery. Over 30 000 tickets have already been sold, so book now!

The Little Mermaid
Where: Baxter Flipside, Cape Town
When: 4 – 29 December 2012
Tickets: R60 – R70
The Little Mermaid will also be showing at The People’s Theatre in Johannesburg from 5 Nov – 23 Dec 2012.

My childhood dream was to be a mermaid, so this is possibly my favourite Disney tale. And I’m clearly not alone, because after a sell-out season at the Canal Walk Theatre this winter, The Little Mermaid is making a holiday appearance at the Baxter. Based on the classic story by Hans Christian Andersen, the tale is brought to life with memorable music, inventive sets, exquisite costumes, and puppets.

Beauty and the Beast
Where: Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre, Durban
When: 29 November 2012 – 6 Jan 2013
Tickets: R60

Be swept away by this captivating production of Disney’s multi-award winning musical. This beloved “tale as old as time” follows the enchanting story of a brave, small-town girl who is taken prisoner by a reclusive Beast, who is really a prince under a magical spell. Please note that no under 3s are permitted.

Sleeping Beauty
Where: Irene Village Theatre, Pretoria
When: 30 November – 15 December 2012
Tickets: R65 – R85

Designed to entertain both young and old, this family show is sure to brighten up your Christmas and have you dancing down the aisles. Come along and see Prince Philip rescue the beautiful Sleeping Beauty from the evil magic spell of Maleficent, with the help of the three good fairies of course. As in all classic fairy tales, children will love seeing how good always triumphs over evil. This is a princess story that even the boys will love.

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
Where: Artscape Theatre Foyer, Cape Town
When: 10 – 22 December 2012
Tickets: R50 (R45 for block bookings of 20+)

With the amount of Disney princess productions that are making their way to the stage, the offering just wouldn’t be complete without Snow White, Disney’s original princess. Follow the classic story of a wicked Queen who becomes consumed with jealousy over her stepdaughter, the kind and loving Snow White. This well known tale will warm many hearts.

Potted Potter
Where: Pieter Toerien Main Theatre, Montecasino, Johannesburg
When: 23 November 2012 – 6 January 2013
Tickets: R250
Also showing at Theatre on the Bay in Cape Town from 8 – 26 January 2013.

Playing to sold out theatres all over the world, this hilarious stage comedy condenses the seven Harry Potter books into 70 side-splitting minutes. With brilliant songs, ridiculous props, endless costumes, a fire-breathing dragon, and even a real life game of Quidditch, your kids will be spellbound by this generous dose of Hogwarts magic! This family show is appropriate for ages 6 to Dumbledore (very old indeed).

Once your kids have an appreciation for the theatre, you can encourage them to spend hours (yes, HOURS) creating their own productions at home! Happy holidays!
