Description

Most of Cape Town's black community have migrated from the historic 'homelands' of the Eastern Cape to informal settlements on the Cape Flats. Many live here in appalling conditions inherited from the apartheid regime. During apartheid the south-Western Cape was a 'Coloured preference area', so the Black people living here were deemed illegal and no governmental contingency was made for their huge influx to the urban area. This led to squalid living conditions with underdeveloped infrastructure. While the new democratic government is now investing heavily in upliftment for those discriminated against in the past, informal settlements in the Cape still remain a major challenge.
