Description
The Cederberg Algeria - Grey Rhebok is one of eight self-catering cottages in the Algeria section of the Cederberg Wilderness Area. The Cederberg was proclaimed as a Wilderness in 1973. The 66,811-hectares of mountainous terrain is located in the Cape Floral Region only 3 hours outside Cape Town. The Cederberg Mountains, burnt orange by iron oxide, dominate the landscape. Jagged sandstone rock formations, like the Maltese Cross and the Wolfberg Arch, and ancient San and Khoi rock art, make this area truly spectacular.
The Cederberg lies 250 km north of Cape Town, stretching from the Middelberg Pass in Citrusdal to north of the Pakhuis Pass at Clanwilliam. The wilderness encompasses about 71,000-hectares of rugged, mountainous terrain, making it a top spot in the Western Cape for hiking and rock-climbing enthusiasts. The Cederberg, which forms part of the Cape floral Region, is a World Heritage Site, is covered in mountain fynbos, including the laurel protea, the red disa, rooibos, and the rare and endemic snow protea. Rare Clanwilliam cedars, the area’s namesake, dot the higher mountain cliffs. The area is also rich in wildlife. Visitors with a keen eye may spot porcupines, honey badger, the Cape clawless otter and aardvark. The lucky few may even catch a glimpse of the elusive leopard. There are also smaller predators like the African wild cat, lynx, bat-eared fox, aardwolf and Cape fox. Other, more common animals include baboons, dassies, grey rhebok, klipspringers, duiker and grysbok.
The Grey Rhebok cottage can accommodate up to 4 adults and 2 children under 12-years old and comprises 2 bedrooms, 1 bathroom, and an open-plan kitchen and living area. The first bedroom contains a double bed and the second bedroom contains 2 single beds. The bathroom features a walk-in shower, a toilet and a washbasin.
The kitchen and living area is modernly furnished with colourful pictures added to enhance the natural environment in which they are situated. The kitchen is well-equipped for self-catering and includes a 4-plate stove and oven, fridge, microwave, toaster, kettle, cutlery and crockery, pots and pans. The lounge area contains a closed combustion indoor fireplace, and a sleeper couch that can accommodate 2 children under 12-years old. The cottage opens to a large stoep with a picnic table, undercover braai facilities, and beautiful views over the mountain. A braai grid and a tripod is supplied.
