Description

Halfmoon Hollow Eco Cottage is a lovely self-catering cottage for 2 people in a small valley in the foothills of the Outeniqua Mountains next to a stream, 30 km from Mossel Bay. It is is ideal for a romantic getaway, nature lovers and birdwatchers, or just guests looking to escape the craziness of city life.

Hand-built by the owners, this unique, eco-friendly cottage makes use of solar energy, and water is provided by the mountain stream. All the woodwork was made from trees from the plantation, some of which are over 18 years old and was planted by the owners.

The cottage comprises 1 bedroom, 1 bathroom, a kitchen, and a lounge area. The bedroom is furnished with a double bed, and the private bathroom is fitted with a shower, and a compost toilet. Due to the cottage being so close to the stream, a flush toilet could not be installed, and instead of flushing, a cup of pine sawdust needs to be added after the toilet has been used. This keeps the toilet fresh, and speeds up the composting process. Two sleeper couches are available for children on request. For convenience, linen and bath towels are provided, and guests please need to bring their own swimming towels.

The rustic kitchen is equipped with a fridge, a gas stove, cutlery and crockery, pots and pans, as well as tea- and coffee-making facilities, and meals can be enjoyed at the dining table. The lounge has a cosy seating area and a fireplace, and opens a deck with braai facilities. The cottage is not equipped with a TV or Wi-Fi access, and limited cellphone reception is available.

The deck has a seating area and braai facilities. In summer, guests can cool down in the private plunge pool. It is advised that guests stock up beforehand as there are no local shops.

Guests can take a walk to the farm dam, with the possibility to see the local baboon troop, explore the pathways with a chance encounter of a bosbokkie, porcupine, otter, or even a caracal. Various bird species live on the farm, which is home to over 120 native tree species, various types of fynbos.

Activities in Ruiterbos include horse riding, hiking and cycling trails, a petting park and The Western Cape Butterfly Sanctuary. There are also various restaurants and pubs close by.
