Very friendly staff. Very caring.

I felt that the place is not in the best area and for that reason I thought that it was overpriced. The staff, however, were lovely and very caring and wanted to ensure that we were happy. The rooms are very small, but they were clean - a bit of a strange smell - but nothing you can't live with. The owners were nowhere to be seen.

Disappointing.

Four days before our arrival, Cathrine phoned to ask how old my child was and what time we planned on arriving. She messaged again on the day of our arrival to ask what time we planned on arriving. Later the same day Sandra messaged to ask what time we were arriving. Then I was phoned by the agents to find out what time we were arriving. The area was not as expected. The BnB is in a semi-commercial area, in amongst businesses. We arrived at 8 pm and saw people sitting on pavements drinking and homeless people pushing trollies around the neighbourhood. We considered finding alternative accommodation but as it was late and I had already paid in full we decided to go in and give it a chance. Parking was very narrow but fenced off with an electric gate. We were met by Sandra, who was very welcoming. She informed us that we had been "upgraded" from the queen room (queen-sized bed and another bed for my daughter) to two separate rooms; The King (advertised as a king-size bed while it is actually a queen size) and another room next door with a double bed. I was not prepared to leave my 14 yr old daughter in her own room so we decided my husband would sleep in the double room and we would sleep in The King. The King was really nice despite not having a king-size bed. My husband did find his room was not cleaned properly. Unfortunately, when we showered there was no hot water. We requested breakfast at 7 am the next morning. Sandra said she did not know if she would be able to make it so early but she would try. Breakfast was served at 7 am. We were not asked our preferences for how we wanted our eggs done or if we wanted brown or white toast and the "Russian" turned out to be fried Viennas. The coffee was in a Jacobs bottle but definitely not Jacobs. We told Sandra that there was no hot water in either of our rooms and she offered to let us use another room's shower and said they would look into the water issue. We were not given a gate remote and told to just phone Cathrine when we came back later. When we returned in the afternoon we could not get hold of anyone to let us in. I went through the side gate and went to find the lady to let us in. We used different parking that time. The gate there was on manual and was left unlocked during the day. We were told that the hot water was now working. That evening we attended a concert but Catherine had to wait up for us to let us in. We were delayed coming home due to traffic congestion and Catherine phoned us to find out where we were. I felt terribly guilty keeping her up but at the same time, one should feel free to come and go when on vacation. Once again there was no hot water in the showers. On the whole Newlife is perhaps a case of "you get what you pay for" as one of the cheaper BnBs but I definitely don't think it warrants its 3-star AA rating. The three ladies who took turns looking after us were very hospitable and accommodating.

Newlife Bed & Breakfast 's response

Dear Fiona,

First and foremost I'd like to thank you for coming to our Guest house. I'd like to apologize for everything that you were not happy about.
The reason for our staff to keep on messaging you on WhatsApp was that they wanted to make sure what time you were checking in because on your booking you didn't state if it was ''7am'' or ''7pm'' so we are really sorry.
We also apologize about the gate remote, in our guest house we have a policy that says you need to pay a deposit of R200 for security reasons, we don't give our guests a remote at night because we once had an incident before where a guest stole from us.
Also about the king room, the bed is not actually the king size it is the queen bed, we are sorry we should have explained this to you.
About the breakfast, the lady who was serving you says she explained everything to you including the viennas.
We also had minor issues with the geyser but we managed to fix the problem, really sorry for any inconvenience.
We Really apologize for everything, and we also thank you for letting us know. It will surely help us in the future to do better.

Fairly cheap but very plain and old.

We were warmly received. The building is not very well maintained and needs attention. To get to the rooms on the outside one has to walk through the kitchen which is not desirable. Parking in front of the reception is on the street and the "secure" parking is two houses away from the guest house itself. Just doesn't feel right. Staff went out of their way to make it comfortable for us.

Gemaklike verblyf, goeie behandeling en goeie diens.

Als was sonder 'n probleem. Hulle is baie hulpvaardig. Plek is netjies en kos uitstekend. Kan dalk net aandag gee aan hul parkeergeriewe.
