Description
Grootkolk Wilderness Camp is an unfenced camp in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park. Only 20 km from Union’s End and close to the Namibian border is the Grootkolk Wilderness Camp, the most northerly situated camp. The remote northerly parts of the Kgalagadi are a favorite haunt for the unique black-maned Kalahari lion. Although it is in a remote situation this small and exclusive camp is still accessible to 2-wheel drive vehicles. A waterhole which attracts wildlife is visible from the camp when lit up at night and adds to the magical atmosphere of the vast open plains.
Where the red dunes and scrub fade into infinity and herds of gemsbok, springbok, eland and blue wildebeest follow the seasons, where imposing camel thorn trees provide shade for huge black-mane lions and vantage points for leopard and many raptors, this is the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park. Access to the Park can be gained through 5 gates in 3 different countries. From South Africa access is through the Twee Rivieren gate, from Namibia through the Mata-Mata gate and from Botswana through the Two Rivers, Mabuasehube and Kaa gates.
The camp has 4 Desert Cabins, each containing 2 single beds, a ceiling fan, a shower en suite with a toilet and washbasin, and a fridge-freezer. Each cabin has a patio with a washing up area, and a table and chairs, as well as a braai facility. Power in the camp is supplied by solar and gas, there are no conventional plugs.
The camp also has a communal kitchen with a gas stove and oven, fridge-freezer, a dining table and chairs, and a shared braai fireplace.
The camp is unfenced, bringing the veld right to your door. There is a trained and armed ranger to help protect you from wild predators. The camp is accessible to sedan vehicles, however a 4x4 with high ground clearance and low range capabilities is recommended.
