Description
The Mata Mata Rest Camp is situated on the banks of the Auob River on the western boundary of the park. The camp borders Namibia and is surrounded by thorny Kalahari dune bushveld. The border post to Namibia was opened in October 2007 and makes travelling to other parks within southern Africa much more convenient. Giraffe, typically adapted to these arid conditions are a favourite sight around Mata Mata. This is the smallest of the traditional camps and has a reception, swimming pool, shop and fuel facilities.
Where the red dunes and scrub fade into infinity and herds of gemsbok, springbok, eland and blue wildebeest follow the seasons, where imposing camel thorn trees provide shade for huge black-mane lions and vantage points for leopard and many raptors, this is the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park. Access to the Park can be gained through 5 gates in 3 different countries. From South Africa access is through the Twee Rivieren gate, from Namibia through the Mata-Mata gate and from Botswana through the Two Rivers, Mabuasehube and Kaa gates.
The camp has been given a major face-lift. The older chalets have been upgraded, the prefabs removed and 8 exquisite brand-new thatched chalets have been built. The new chalets all overlook the dry river bed allowing visitors to feel at one with nature.
Night drives and guided day walks can also be arranged from here.
