Description
The Tygerhoek Karoo Mountain Retreat is the perfect Karoo getaway, immersed in nature, off-the-grid and completely private. The Tygerhoek Karoo Mountain Retreat is situated 20 km outside of Touws River, where the khaki green Karoo scrub of the Slangrivier Valley fades into the folds of the Langeberg mountains. On the southwestern edge of the Great Karoo, it lies east of the Hex River Mountains and north of the Langeberg. Hidden in a remote valley, the reserve consists of over 4,000-hectares of unfarmed indigenous wilderness area.
Self-catering accommodation is offered in a luxury lodge and 2 simple cottages, which are placed remotely apart, to ensure a private and secluded stay. Each unit is surrounded by indigenous trees and succulents and has beautiful views of the mountains and plains. The lodge and cottages are all built of local stone, blending unobtrusively into the landscape. The interiors are tastefully decorated with luxury linen in the bedrooms, and an interesting array of quirky collectables and antiques giving the houses their Karoo character. The lodge and cottages are well equipped for self-catering, with supplied bedding and towels, fully equipped kitchens and outdoor braais. The units are all completely off-the-grid with power for solar lighting only. There is no 220V electricity. The stoves, fridges and geysers all work off gas. Due to the remote location of the reserve, there is no Wi-Fi and no cell signal reception.
As this is a wilderness area, we unfortunately cannot allow pets of any kind onto the reserve.
There is an abundance of wildlife on the reserve. Visitors may see springbok, steenbok, gemsbok, klipspringer, Vaal rhebok, duiker, African wildcat, civet, dassies, leopard, honey badgers, aardvark and porcupine, as well as predators that include black backed jackal, caracal and the Cape mountain leopard. The reserve is also home to the endangered riverine rabbit and 3 breeding pairs of Verreaux's eagles. It's a haven for birds, expect to see rare lifers, Karoo korhaans, Karoo robins, mousebirds and starlings, to name a few. Evidence of fresh scat remind us of the leopards ever present in the hills. Scratched earth marks the trails of porcupines and aardvark, too shy to appear when people are about. In addition, you may encounter field mice, snakes and the occasional mongoose.
The reserve is extensive and visitors can either explore the valleys or climb up onto the mountain to enjoy magnificent views of the Langeberg mountain range and Little Karoo. The land is a trail runner's and mountain biker's dream offering good climbs and technical sections coupled with fast flat sections on jeep track.
A high clearance or 4x4 vehicle is advised. Low slung sedans will struggle on the dirt roads.
