Description
The Athlone Stadium is a multipurpose stadium on the Cape Flats in Cape Town, South Africa. Built in 1972, the stadium holds 30 000 people and is mostly used for soccer (football) matches. It is the home ground of both Ajax and Santos, two Cape Town Premier Soccer League teams.
Athlone Stadium was one of two Cape Town training venues for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. In 2009 the stadium underwent an extensive upgrade in preparation for the World Cup. The estimated cost of the renovation was R297 million. This included a newly laid grass pitch and the upgrading of the spectator stands.
In both the west and east stands are various types of facilities including a VIP area with seats looking out onto the field, a boardroom in the west stand, conference rooms in both the west and east stand, as well as a number of meeting rooms, and banqueting areas.
