Big Bay Beach
Description
Big Bay Beach is one of two beaches situated in Bloubergstrand, a northern suburb of Cape Town, in the Western Cape province of South Africa. Bloubergstrand is Afrikaans for “blue mountain beachâ€, which is derived from the nearby Blaauwberg Mountain. The beach offers a magnificent view of Table Mountain and Robben Island across Big Bay.
It is a great family beach with long, flat sands perfect for sun-tanning, walking, and flying kites. The area can get very windy so it is best visited on a calm day. Although the icy Benguela current makes the water very cold, it is very popular with surfers. A lifeguard station is available for safety and just behind it is a café offering refreshments. A variety of shops and restaurants are situated along the beachfront road. A rocky point divides Big Bay Beach from the second smaller Little Bay (or Small Bay) Beach, a quieter beach nearby.
