Description

Cecilia Forest is a beautiful part of Constantia, Cape Town, in which to walk. Named after Cecil John Rhodes, who owned the land at one time, it was also once inhabited by the Khoisan. There are a number of routes to hike which begin at the car park where Rhodes and Hohenhort Drives meet, and provide a few enchanting hours out in nature.

Hiking trails

Route 1:

There is a tranquil walk that will take you through the forest and up along Constantia Nek. It’s great if you want to avoid the direct sunlight on a hot day. The walk is easy and travels along a gravel road and several single tracks. There are a few streams along the way with fresh mountain water, but take a picnic along to enjoy in the forest. Start: Cecilia Forest car park where Hohenhort Drive meets Rhodes Drive

  • Duration: 1.5 – 2 hours
  • Terrain: Gravel road, single track
  • Difficulty: Easy with mild uphill sections

Route 2:

A second route leads to Cecilia Forest's waterfall. This walk is achieved either via the Cecilia Forest car park, or from Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens. The latter hike heads up past the dam above the gardens and onto the ridge where you follow signs to Rooikatkloof and then to Cecilia Ravine, towards the waterfall. This is a popular walk with hikers, although more difficult than the many ambles you can follow by remaining on the contour paths from Cecilia Forest car park through to Newlands Forest. Start: Cecilia Forest car park where Hohenhort Drive meets Rhodes Drive or Kirstenbosch Gardens

  • Duration: 2.5 hours
  • Terrain: Contour path, stairs
  • Difficulty: Moderate
