Description

Drakenstein Lion Park is the only genuine lion sanctuary in the Western Cape. Situated on a 50 acre habitat in Paarl, in the scenic Cape Winelands, the park features the largest lion population, including rare white lions and tigers.

The lion park was established in 1998 in order to provide injured and distressed big cats a safe and natural environment. All of the animals brought here have been hand-reared or bred in captivity, which means they are unable to be set free into the wild. Visitors can enjoy viewing the lions up close and personal, watch feedings, and visit the new facility, Chimp Haven. The facility has been purpose built to house animals displaced by the closing of the Tygerberg Zoo.

At an additional cost, adventurous visitors can enjoy an overnight stay in a 'well appointed' tent in the middle of the park to get a better experience of what it’s like to sleep amongst the lions. There is also a deli from which meals and drinks can be bought, picnic areas, a children’s jungle gym, and farm animals. Visitors can choose to virtually adopt a lion, which includes food, veterinary care, and housing costs. Feedings happen on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 16h00.
