Description

Ellis Park Stadium is a rugby union and association football stadium in the city of Johannesburg, Gauteng Province, South Africa. It is synonymous with rugby and was the venue for the 1995 Rugby World Cup Final, where Joel Stransky booted over a last minute drop goal for South Africa to beat New Zealand and win the game 15-12 after extra time was allowed. In 2005 Ellis Park made history by becoming the first black owned stadium in South Africa.

Today, the stadium hosts both football and rugby games, and is also used as a venue for other large events and open-air concerts. The venue can accommodate 60 000 seated and approximately 10 000 on the floor area.

Ellis Park is home to the following teams: • Orlando Pirates (Premier Soccer League) • Lions (Super Rugby Southern Hemisphere rugby competition) • Golden Lions (Currie Cup domestic rugby competition)
