Groot Constantia Manor House
Description
The Groot Constantia Farm has a history that goes back all the way to 1685, when Simon van der Stel was granted the land. It is one of the oldest wine farms in South Africa, located in the Constantia valley in the southern suburbs of Cape Town. There is an overview display in the Jonkershuis complex which will give you a good idea of what's happened in Groot Constantia from it's beginnings to it's present day status.
There are numerous historical displays around the estate, and the architecture is a big draw for visitors. You can visit the coach house and see the numerous carriages through the centuries on display, or perhaps you'd prefer a trip to the wine museum which showcases a wide variety of cups through the ages, and also various wine storage methods.
The main attraction is the manor house with its large collection of period furniture, brass, paintings, and textiles. It will give visitors a good idea of what 18th - 19th century life was like in the Cape.
