Horse Memorial
Description
The Horse Memorial is a famous landmark and provincial heritage site that stands tall in Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape. It was erected in 1905 to honour the estimated 350,000 horses that died during the Anglo-Boer War.
Port Elizabeth is a suitable place for the memorial to be erected as the port was used for British soldiers to take delivery of their horses during the war. The memorial consists of a life-sized soldier and a horse that stands approximately 1.7m tall with an inscription that reads “The greatness of a nation consists not so much in the number of its people or the extent of its territory, as in the extent and justice of its compassion.â€
