Johannesburg Art Gallery & Sculpture Park
Description
The Johannesburg Art Gallery was first opened in 19010 on the campus of the University of Witwatersrand. Since 1915, it has been housed in a building in Joubert Park, in the heart of Joburg’s city centre. The gallery has displays of traditional, historical, and modern South African art, as well as works from European schools. There are also collections of ceramics, sculpture, furniture, multi-media, and textiles on view.
Visitors can look forward to sighting works by famous artists like Rodin, Dante, Gabriel Rosetti, Picasso, Monet, and Moore, as well as South African experts like Gerard Sekotto, Alexis Preller, Maud Sumner, and Ezrom Legae. Trained voluntary guides offer tours of the gallery’s exhibitions. There is a restaurant on site.
