Description
Johannesburg Zoo is one of the city’s most popular family attractions. Situated in Parkview, Johannesburg, the zoo covers 81 hectares of land and offers visitors an exciting day of animal sightings.
Animal enclosures include the Amazonia, which houses a variety of animal species found in the Amazon forests, such as spider monkeys, armadillos, and pumas. Other enclosures include the AngloGold Lion Enclosure, Ape House, Cheetah Slopes, Crocodile Country, as well as the reptile enclosures. If you have kids, don’t miss out on a visit to the Farm Yard with friendly animals you can touch and a wonderful kids playground. Madagascar features some unusual lemurs found only in Madagascar, such as crowned lemur, ring-tailed lemur, red bellied lemur, and mongoose lemur. Temple of the Ancients has creepy crawlies like reptiles, amphibians, and invertebrate species. Other animals to see include pygmy hippo, rhino, elephant, a number of antelope, a variety of birds, and more.
The Café Fino restaurant offers delicious meals like sandwiches, pizza, and salads. There are also several food kiosks, ice cream vendors, and other stalls situated around the zoo. Should you wish to bring your own food, there are plenty of open picnic sites available. Other facilities include an ATM and information kiosk.
The zoo offers a number of guided tours. The 3 day tours include the Ferry Tour which stops at 5 main animal complexes; the Senior Citizen Tour which includes a ferry tour, tea and biscuits, and animal interactions; and the Behind the Scenes Tour which lets you explore where only staff may go. Evening tours include a Sunset Tour, Moonlight Tour, and Night Tour. A sleepover at the zoo is a must, where you can enjoy a Behind the Scenes Tour and Night Tour with a bonfire. Tours must be booked a minimum of 2 weeks in advance.
