Description

The Kliptown Open Air Museum, also known as the Walter Sisulu Square of Dedication, is an intriguing stop on a tour of Soweto. Dedicated to anti-apartheid activist, Walter Sisulu, the museum tells the story of the drafting of the Freedom Charter, which took place on 26 June 1955, through a visual journey of photographs, art, news clippings, oral testimonies, and song.

The Freedom Charter became the manifesto of the African National Congress, setting out the aims and aspirations of the opponents of apartheid and providing a vision for a future South Africa. Today Walter Sisulu Square is the centre of community life and modern entertainment with shops, restaurants, hawkers’ stalls, art galleries, a tourist information office, and a 4-star hotel with conferencing facilities.
