Lanseria International Airport
Description
Lanseria International Airport (HLA) is a medium-sized airport on the Westrand just off the R512, north of Randburg, Johannesburg. Lanseria Airport is the busiest airport in the Gauteng region after OR Tambo, owing to the fact that it is the preferred entry point for most overseas corporate, diplomatic and private aircraft visiting South Africa. It is also the ONLY private international airport in South Africa. While it is one of the most used airports in the country, Lanseria had humble beginnings. It was started in 1972 by 2 pilots as merely a grass strip airfield, and was only officially opened in August 1974. Lanseria Airport is well known as being the airport that Nelson Mandela landed at after being released from prison in 1990.
